My story

Several years ago, I discovered there is a new way to help a loved one.

I was addicted and using for over 7 years, right in front of my family - sneaking around, wasting time, and using in stolen moments.

I remember my family wanting me to quit, and not knowing how to help.

I remember wanting to quit so bad. I remember wanting to quit, but not knowing how.

Even though my family wanted to help - We were all lost about what to do.

My family was not united on what to do about it. That turned out to be a bigger issue than my using. Which might surprise you.

There are a lot of people in this position. Waiting for the opportunity to be shown how to quit.

I am not suggesting that they were responsible for my choices. However, looking back we all could have done a lot of things differently.

I had tried to quit many times before, unsuccessfully. Until I approached my father and he started a family council of support that ultimately became my basis for long term recovery and brought my family some peace. Finally.

I didn’t realize I had stumbled on a simple process that is a new movement to help both families and loved ones in the same situation.

Until a father came to me about his son.

The father found signs of substance use. His son’s personality had changed. His behavior was off. The father and the rest of the family knew something was happening, but some didn't want to believe it.

The father was going broke spending his retirement money trying to support his son and his habit. This caused the other siblings to be angry. These ‘kind' and 'helpful’ actions were, at times, making the problem worse for everyone in the family.

The father didn’t know how to help his son, but wanted to desperately.

He was worried he had to wait for rock bottom before anything could change. However, something about waiting for "rock bottom" just didn't seem right.

He felt shame that this was happening to his family, an ordinary enough family.

So I shared my experience with him, and the hope that I had witnessed from other families who united and got to experience their loved one get clean.

The father asked me to help him and his wife. Even though many in the family had different opinions on what to do. they were all willing to step in to help.They were willing to set their differences aside.

At first, the son wanted nothing to do with it.

I called all the family together, and got everyone in a room talking together in the spirit of love, forgiveness, and understanding. The son joined out of curiosity. It was entirely invitational.

The breakthrough came one meeting.

Everyone got to express themselves in a very open, forgiving spirit. This is where the healing started. The family was together as one, for the first time - in a very long time.

There was a sense of intergenerational strength that day as we all sat together. They opened up all the hurt, all the hope, and what it would take for the entire family to heal.

This method gets over 83% of individuals into treatment within three weeks, 96% into treatment within six months and 61% in recovery by the end of the year.

I truly believe that a family can be more powerful than any other type of support - because I have seen this, time and time again..

That’s when I realized that this process wasn’t just for people like me, who wanted to quit. It was simple enough that someone who showed no desire to quit, could also do it, if the family was willing to unite and engage.

My family and I had failed at everything we had tried with one-on-one type approaches. My father monitoring my bank account. Going cold turkey. Tapering myself down. Being experimented on by Doctors

Too often these attempts were done without a group consensus or support.

That’s when I realized there is success within a family by following this simple system, just like my family and I went through.

Through my experience, I found that a family can create a council structure. When they consistently get together and discuss the hard issues, a whole family can find peace and relief, and support.

Since then, I have become officially trained and now help families full time.

The effect is incredibly powerful, if the family is willing to put in the work.

I was surrounded by people who loved me and we're influencing me daily, they were all concerned that I would never have what I loved and most truly desired in life. I wanted to build a family and a stable home for myself.

I desperately wanted change, change that would stick.

I didn’t want to give up on life, and my hopes for life, for a family of my own.

Today, I have that family with my wife and beautiful children.

So I want to share more details about how I achieved this. And how I now help other families with the same challenges.

"My brother started drinking and using drugs at an early age. I’m guessing 13-14yrs old. As time went on things got worse, and he hit his first rock bottom. He stayed sober for a while and then relapsed. He ended up on “the block” homeless for 2 years. He did become sober again for a few more years. Got a job, car, and a place to live.

I answered with, because maybe it’s to save one or all of my boys from ever having to go through it?? Or maybe it’s to save someone else? I truly believe we all go through things for a reason. We are all challenged. We all have our temptations. We all have our trials. That’s how we learn and grow."
